Latitude, $\mathbf{\lambda}$: * (decimal degrees) (Ex: $\mathbf{\lambda}$ = 45.5 => 45º 30' N) |
$\mathbf{f}$ = $\times 10^{-4} [s^{-1}]$, Coriolis freq. $\mathbf{T_f}$ = , Inertial period |
|
The Coriolis frequency ("Coriolis parameter") for a given latitude is given by:
$ f (\lambda) = 2 \Omega \sin(\lambda)\;\;[s^{-1}], \quad\text{where}\quad \Omega = \frac{\displaystyle 2 \pi}{\displaystyle 24\times 3600} \;[s^{-1}]$
is the angular velocity of the earth around its axis and λ is the latitude. The convention is that north latitudes are positive, south latitudes are negative.
