The diagram below places some known stars on the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram in accordance with their luminosity and temperature. The bottom diagram compares the relative sizes of stars. Supergiants are so large that the Sun and the Earth with its orbit could fit inside.
Massive stars of very high luminosity burn their nuclear fuel at a very rapid rate and cannot be seen for more than a few million years. Rigel, the brightest object in Orion, was not yet shining when the first humanids began to walk on Earth some 6 - 8 million years ago.
