Indian astronomer, b. c. 598, d. c. 665.
Brahmagupta was the last great astronomer of the early Indian tradition, which culminated in his work. In 628 he wrote Brahma-sphuta-siddhanta ("The Opening of the Universe"), an encyclopaedia of the Hindu astronomical system in 25 chapters. As was the custom for Indian literature of the time, his work is written in verse.
23 chapters of his work deal with astronomy and discuss lunar eclipses, the lunar phases, the determination of the position of planets and other aspects of the planetary system. Two chapters are on mathematics and contain various problems, such as arithmetic progression and quadratic equations.
