Water mill technology.

The development of water mills in the Middle Ages, based on modern examples.

First water mills were of the "undershoot wheel" type. To increase the water speed through the wheel the river was usually damned and the water channelled towards the wheel.

The "overshoot wheel" uses the weight of the water to drive the mill and is thus more energy-efficient. It requires a diversion of water from the river (mill canal) to achieve the required head to drive the wheel but can be built on fairly small creeks.
