The exercises were originally developed as replacement for face-to-face teaching, in response to the shrinking university budget of the early 1990s. Over the years they have shown their value for students in off-campus locations and those engaging in evening studies. were developed to accompany the textbook Regional Oceanography: an Introduction by Matthias Tomczak and J. Stuart Godfrey. They are designed to give deeper insight into the material covered in the text and to encourage own investigations.
